Mastur Bar

10th Berlin Biennale - We don't need another hero, 2018

Mastur bar (2015/2019) is a traveling bar that has, in addition to drinks, a program of class-concerts, workshops and a collection of objects around the theme of female masturbation. Faleiros invites artists, musicians, djs and sex-workers to collaborate in 7 events that will take place throughout the period of the Bienal. The bar name is the morphological division of the verb “mastur/bar” in Portuguese [to masturbate] and also is the title of a song/video clip by Lady Incentivo, from the song I Feel Love by Donna Summer. During the class-concerts, Faleiros remixes pop songs, interspersing reflections and provocations, videos and choreographies, in which she presents the genealogy of the gesture “desmunhecar” (a synonym for effeminate in Portuguese) which. Through an investigation minute of the gesture that ranges from the fisted hand of hysterics to clinical masturbation for a cure from hysteria, through representations of the idle and languid hands of the eighteenth-century nobility to photographs of madames in the same pose in Vogue magazines; from the “shade” gesture in the voguing to the scroll movement that runs through the sensitive screens of cell phones and tablets in touch capitalism. At genealogy of a gesture, Faleiros goes through the history behind the construction of a defined body as female. Mastur Bar proposes an audio-visual exploration of the different performances that we perform with our fingers and the stories behind a gesture that connects us to ourselves, to the machines and what we desire.
